Performance and Visibility are at the Heart of this Web Build for a Leading Teaching Hospital

University Hospitals Leicester (UHL) is a large teaching hospital that serves the population of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The hospital required a new website for their Clinical Education department.

Their existing website was dated with poor performance and slow load times and provided next to no department visibility.

Centred purely around course bookings, the website alienated a large user group thanks to complex purchase pathways, poor accessibility of information and the inability to filter courses.

Time For Something New

UHL wanted KIJO to create a brand new website that would perform to their exact needs.

They needed a website that would provide online support and messaging to an array of different users including young carers, young adult carers, adult carers, professionals and charity volunteers.

The new website needed a much clearer user journey, improved design and a more engaging user experience.

These requirements formed the foundations for the KIJO team to develop a website that would help UHL to deliver their work and enhance their online presence.

Clearly Defined User Journeys

The main navigation paths were designed around the different user types on the website. They were clearly segregated with the use of colour coded illustrations.

The Need for Visibility and Accessibility

We created a website that was fit for purpose for UHL by focusing on compelling content that would showcase the benefits of the trust and position the East Midlands as the ideal destination for prospective students and staff.

Auditing the existing user journey of the old website allowed the KIJO team to determine which areas could be improved, simplified and where possible, automated.

A specific hierarchy of content ensures all users can find the information and courses that are relevant to them and a simplified course booking system is easy for all user levels to understand.

We broke the website content down into Our Doctors, Undergraduate Education, Training Programmes and Facilities which shaped the top level navigation of the website. Within this we were then able to create landing pages that contained more specific and in-depth information such as targeted pages for both junior and senior doctors.

We implemented colour coded user journeys, pink for doctors, green for undergraduates, blue for training programmes and orange for facilities, for clear segregation. CTA’s, new filtering options and navigation paths allow the goals of each user persona to be reached with as few clicks as possible.

Appealing to all User Groups

We identified 3 user personas and designed tailored user journeys for each users needs; enrolled students, trust staff and prospective students and staff.

We wanted to give enrolled users easy access to the education hub so that was the main Call To Action. However, we still included compelling content to showcase the wider benefits of the Trust & East Midlands as a destination for prospective students
and staff.

Industry-Leading Performance Standards

In order to ensure the performance of the new website was up to standard and far exceeded the existing UHL website, we implemented various solutions and industry-leading software.

The KIJO web experts installed WP-Rocket to utilise caching and minified the loading of CSS and javascript.

Optimised DOM output, improved asset loading and lazy loading images helped to improve page load speed and allowed the website to reach over 90% in Google Lighthouse scores.

The registration of new users will now be automated through a sign-up form.

Streamlining the User Journey

The navigation structure was streamlined making it easier for users to find the information they were looking for. Additionally, the use of effective call to action buttons throughout the site encouraged users to take specific actions, such as starting a discussion or finding an event. Another key feature was the ability for users to start discussions on individual resources. This added a social aspect to the platform and encouraged engagement and interaction among users.

Increasing Visibility and Engagement

One key aspect of the Education Hub was the introduction of a discussions board and trust-wide calendar. This allowed staff and students to easily access information about upcoming events and initiatives, and to participate in discussions with others in their department or across the organization. As a result, the department was able to improve communication and collaboration among staff and students, and to increase engagement with the department’s initiatives and activities.

Appealing to both Students and Staff

A key focus of the Education Hub was the creation of personalised dashboards for both students and staff. These dashboards allowed users to easily access the information and resources they needed to achieve their primary goals, such as uploading resources or taking part in discussions.

Improving Content Discovery

Another feature of the Education Hub was the improvement of content filtering based on user interests. This was achieved through the use of profiles, allowing users to select their interests and preferences. This information was then used to filter the resources that was displayed to the user, ensuring that they only saw content that was relevant to them. Additionally, users were able to save resources to a favourites board, allowing them to easily access their saved content at a later date. The trust-wide calendar was also enhanced, with the ability to filter events by relevance to the user.

The Results

Following the creation of the new UHL website, 55% of users were able to reach the goal of navigating to the junior doctors page in order to find out what support is available. This was a 293% increase from the previous UHL website.

The new website also achieved an average Google Lighthouse score of 90 and will support UHL as it continues its vital work as the East Midlands leading teaching hospital.
